Drama isn’t just crying and piano music; it’s devastation, obsession, transformation. Whether it’s slow-burn heartbreak or explosive family feuds, this category is for the films that leave a bruise. I keep the tissue box close and the cynicism closer.
The Voices of Our Mother (2026) is a dive into supernatural horror where faith is a mere mask. Mark O’Brien directs and stars in this Shudder release that trades jump scares for the creeping rot of hidden family secrets.
Fathers is a slow-burn psychological thriller about a woman escaping years of captivity, only to discover her memory is her enemy. Harley Wallen’s intimate indie examines identity in his 2026 release.
Carolina Caroline (2026) is a retro-aesthetic crime romance starring Samara Weaving and Kyle Gallner as two people who meet, fall in love, and rob banks across the American Southeast. Directed by Adam Carter Rehmeier, it’s a film about passion over consequence, and the cost of choosing someone over everything else.
Deep Water (2026) is a survival thriller that drops a doomed flight directly into shark-infested waters. Aaron Eckhart and Angus Sampson navigate incredible disaster sequences, stellar set design, and hungry predators. Read the full review to see if it sinks or swims
Mother Mary (2026) is a visually striking queer breakup drama masquerading as an A24 thriller. Anne Hathaway and Michaela Coel deliver fiercely committed performances, but the repetitive dialogue leaves you checking your watch.
Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride positions Mary Shelley as author-narrator, finally telling the story Hollywood wrote without her. Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale don’t play monsters. They play two beings finding total freedom in each other. Devastating, divisive, and utterly audacious.
