Upcoming Horror Movies – What to Add to Your Watchlist

Mother of Movies also has an “Upcoming Thriller Movies List.” We start with all the R-rated titles. Or for a more specific release list, check out Thrillers of 2019.

October 2026 Horror Movies

This is not a year of sequels keeping seats warm. These are films with intent. Below is the Mother of Movies breakdown of what’s actually worth your time, the Upcoming Horror Movies split by confirmed release date and titles still waiting on one.

Hallowarrior — October 16, 2026 (Shudder)

Streaming on Shudder from October 16. Read the Mother of Movies Hallowarrior review.

Crawlers — October 16, 2026

Matilda Lutz (Revenge) and Gregg Sulkin lead this R-rated horror-thriller from director Angel Gómez Hernández, with William Miller and Melina Matthews in the cast. Details are thin, but the cast and the R rating are enough to put it on the list. In cinemas October 16th.

Clayface — October 23, 2026

Mike Flanagan wrote it. (Screenplay by Hossein Amini) and James Watkins directs (Eden Lake, 2008). Tom Rhys Harries plays an actor whose body begins transforming into living clay after a dangerous procedure in Gotham City. DC’s first real horror offering under the new chapter, and with Flanagan’s fingerprints on the script, body horror is the throughline. These are the right hands for this concept. If that’s not enough, the producers are James Gunn, Lynn Harris, Peter Safran, and Matt Reeves.

The Young People — Neon (Osgood Perkins) (Spain – October)

Perkins just came off Longlegs and The Monkey. Neon backing him again. The film follows two pals from school who discover evil things about each other that sour the friendship. Perkins name alone carries weight. Releasing in Spain in October 2026, Nicole Kidman, Johnny Knoxville, Kaitlyn Cielo, and Heather Graham are amongst the cast. Lyrical Media is producing, and we wish we knew more. No USA release date yet

November 2026 Horror Movies

The Last Temptation of Becky — November 4, 2026

Neil Patrick Harris, Lulu Wilson and Kate Siegel star.

Littermates — November 6, 2026

Littermates is dated for November 6. More to come as details land.

The Great Beyond — Warner Bros. (JJ Abrams) – November 13, 2026

JJ Abrams is writing and directing a drama/fantasy/horror for Warner Bros. via Bad Robot. The cast list contains Jenna Ortega, Glen Powell, Samuel L. Jackson, and Emma Mackey, so we wish we knew more about The Great Beyond. We do know it follows a newlywed couple up against a supernatural force. Originally filmed under the title Ghostwriter, it marks JJ Abrams’ return to the script niche after a long 7 years away. No wonder this is hard to dig anything up about.

Victorian Psycho — November 13, 2026

Maika Monroe, Jason Isaacs and Thomasin McKenzie star.

Return of the Living Dead — November 2026

Not a reboot. A direct continuation, set in Christmas 1985, eighteen months after Dan O’Bannon’s original. Steve Wolsh writes and directs. Devon Sawa leads, with SFX legend Tony Gardner, Zombieland, the Chucky franchise, handling the zombie design, which is the detail that should get your attention. Living Dead Media producing, WithAnO Productions distributing. Early footage screened to a strong crowd reaction. The assignment appears to have been understood

December 2026 Horror Movies

Gods Don’t Give Gifts — December 4, 2026 (Limited)

A horror sci-fi title getting a limited release on December 4.

Werwulf — December 25, 2026

13th-century England. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Lily-Rose Depp, Willem Dafoe, and Ralph Ineson. Eggers has called it the darkest thing he has ever written. Focus Features is distributing. This is the horror event of the year, slow, brutal, folkloric dread from the director of The Witch and The Northman. The Christmas Day release date is the kind of provocation only Eggers could pull off.

January 2027 Horror Movies

The Third Parent

  • Release: January 22, 2027 (moved from August 7, 2026) Distributor: Bleecker Street Media (Walters Media Group – Global)
  • Cast: Rob Lowe, Crispin Glover, Roselyn Sanchez
  • Director: David Michaels Writers: David Michaels, Elias Witherow (story)
  • Composer: Butch Vig Production: Walters Media Group / HanWay Films

It’s the Fourth of July. The neighbourhood is celebrating. And something that calls itself Tommy Taffy has decided to move in. Disguising itself as human, it infiltrates a suburban family and begins imposing its own version of order, authoritarian, methodical, and deeply wrong. Based on the creepypasta of the same name by Elias Witherow, The Third Parent has Crispin Glover playing Tommy Taffy, which is the most perfectly cast horror villain since someone handed Tim Curry a red balloon.

Rob Lowe and Roselyn Sanchez play the parents. Butch Vig (Nirvana, Garbage) scores it. Bleecker Street distributes.

2027 Horror Movies on the Horizon

Studios have started locking in 2027. Dates this far out move often, so treat these as the current plan.

  • May 2027: Anything But Ghosts and Paranormal Activity 8
  • June 2027: Possession (Parker Finn)
  • July 2027: A Quiet Place Part III
  • August 2027: Molepeople
  • September 2027: The Conjuring: First Communion and Blair Witch

No Confirmed Release Date (Upcoming Horror Movies)

Not every title deserves a proper slot, but these horror movies are coming soon and have slightly fewer details online. Watch out for these fresh flicks, and Mother of Movies will update this data as we learn more.

Twilight of the Dead 2026 Release Date

George A. Romero wrote the treatment for the seventh and final instalment in his Living Dead saga before he died in 2017, and it’s finally happening. The project has had a turbulent development with Milla Jovovich and Brad Anderson previously attached before falling through. The new version has the Paz Brothers (The Golem) directing, with Kate Beckinsale now leading.

Set on a decimated earth where the last of humanity is trapped between warring factions and an evolving undead threat. Roundtable Entertainment producing, Magenta Light Studios distributing in North America. Greg Nicotero doing practical makeup effects, the man who started his career on Romero’s own Day of the Dead in 1985, which is the kind of detail that matters for this one.

Altar

A24 and Chernin Entertainment. Directed by Egor Abramenko, whose sci-fi horror Sputnik is one of the more underrated genre films of the last decade. Written by Will Soodik (Westworld), based on a Philip Fracassi short story. Stars Kyle MacLachlan, January Jones, and David Krumholtz, with breakout Good One actress Lily Collias leading. Follows the summer of a young boy forced to grow up faster than he should, which in a Philip Fracassi story means something considerably worse than the usual coming-of-age complications. A24 handling global distribution. One to watch.

Dreamquil 2026 horror thriller movie poster
Official poster for dreamquil, the 2026 horror mystery thriller directed by alex prager, distributed by republic pictures (upcoming horror movies)

DreamQuil — Republic Pictures

Alex Prager directing, horror/mystery/thriller. Brownstone Productions. Republic Pictures distribution. Prager is a visual artist making her feature debut with a distinctive aesthetic and unusual pedigree. Written by Vanessa and Alex Prager, DreamQuill is a potential sleeper. Among the cast are Juliette Lewis, Elizabeth Banks, and Kathryn Newton, which is why this caught my eye. Fresh off SXSW on March 16th, Mother of Movies awaits more information.

Boutique (Pre-production)

Paul Giamatti in a seaside English town horror is a sentence that requires no further justification. Produced by the teams behind Obsession and Fall, distributed by XYZ Films. Plot details are being kept close but the combination of Giamatti, a coastal British setting, and genre specialists XYZ suggests something atmospheric rather than loud. Worth keeping an eye on.

They Know (In Production)

Cast: Bill Hader, Linda Cardellini, Jasmine Williams, Lilou Lang, Lorelei Olivia Mote

Director: Bill Hader

Writers: Bill Hader, Duffy Boudreau

Production: MRC, Hanarply

Leave it to Bill Hader to turn the mundane anxiety of co-parenting into a literal psychological nightmare. For his feature directorial debut, the Barry creator is leaning entirely into horror with They Know, which rolled cameras in LA this spring. The plot taps into a very specific, ugly brand of paranoia: Hader plays a divorced dad who gets a bad feeling about the mysterious guy his ex-wife (Linda Cardellini) is dating, convinced the new boyfriend is brainwashing their daughters.

Industry gossip says Hader shopped this script around for a minute, but producers kept passing because it was “too disturbing and cynical”, which, coming from the guy who gave us the darkest seasons of Barry, is essentially a glowing five-star review.

With his longtime writing partner Duffy Boudreau onboard, expect a completely unsentimental, screw-tightening thriller that trades cheap jump scares for sheer, deeply uncomfortable dread. No poster or release date yet, but this is easily one of the most promising indie horror projects on the horizon.y Death Day), and Kiana Madeira (Fear Street Part 3) are among the cast.

Black Box

  • Release: TBC (Signature Entertainment) Rating: TBC Cast: TBC
  • Director: Steven Quale (Final Destination 5) / Writer: Stephen Susco

Vero Airlines Flight 298 departs New Orleans for Seattle and does not arrive as planned. What happens aboard, and what follows, is described as supernatural. Stephen Susco wrote it (The Grudge, The Grudge 2, Texas Chainsaw 3D) and Steven Quale is directing (Final Destination 5, Into the Storm, the man who was also second unit director on Avatar and Titanic). Produced by Alex Lebovici, who produced Barbarian.

Based on a short film called “The Vessel”, which suggests something specific about the mythology. The pedigree here is firmly genre, no prestige posturing, just people who know how to build dread in enclosed spaces with no exit. One for the horror-thriller crowd.
